The noc shift, decoded
If a nursing job posting says "noc shift", it means the overnight shift: noc is old charting shorthand for nocturnal. On most US units it is the quietest and hardest shift at the same time.
Typical noc hours
Twelve-hour hospitals run noc as 19:00 to 07:00; units on 8-hour patterns run 23:00 to 07:00. Long-term care sometimes uses 22:00 to 06:00. Handover bookends the shift: report from the evening crew as you start, report to days as you crawl out.
What the shift is actually like
Fewer visitors, fewer procedures, fewer managers; more autonomy and more responsibility per nurse, because staffing is thinner and the physician is a phone call away rather than down the corridor. The work concentrates into medication passes, monitoring, admissions that arrive at 02:00, and the paperwork nobody else had time for. Experienced noc nurses will tell you the skill is vigilance without adrenaline.
Pay and survival
Noc almost always carries a differential, often the largest one, and stacking it with weekend premiums is how many nurses make the shift worth it; track your real hourly rate, not the base. Survival is the standard night toolkit with hospital intensity: blackout sleep after the shift, caffeine cut-off at the mid-shift point, cluster your shifts so recovery days are real, and treat the first post-run day as sleep, not errands. Our night shift and sleep guides go deeper.
What does noc stand for?
It is shorthand for nocturnal, inherited from old charting abbreviations (noct.). It simply labels the overnight nursing shift.
What hours is noc shift in a hospital?
Most commonly 19:00 to 07:00 on 12-hour units and 23:00 to 07:00 on 8-hour units. Long-term care facilities often run 22:00 to 06:00.
Does noc shift pay more?
Usually yes: night differentials in US healthcare commonly add several dollars per hour or a percentage uplift, and they stack with weekend differentials where those exist.
