1st, 2nd and 3rd shift, explained
Job ads say "2nd shift" as if everyone was born knowing what that means. Here is the plain version: the three classic shifts split the 24-hour day into morning, evening and night blocks, and almost every schedule you will ever work is a variation on them.
The classic hours
Exact times vary by employer, but the pattern is remarkably stable across factories, hospitals, warehouses and call centres.
| Shift | Also called | Typical hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1st shift | Day shift, morning shift | 07:00 to 15:00 or 08:00 to 16:00 |
| 2nd shift | Late shift, evening shift, swing shift | 15:00 to 23:00 or 16:00 to 00:00 |
| 3rd shift | Night shift, graveyard shift | 23:00 to 07:00 or 00:00 to 08:00 |
What is 1st shift?
First shift is the standard daytime block, usually starting between 06:00 and 08:00 and ending mid-afternoon. It matches school runs, banks and daylight, which is why it is the most requested shift and often the hardest to get as a new hire. The trade-off: early alarms, and in many workplaces the day shift carries the most meetings and supervision.
What is 2nd shift?
Second shift covers the late afternoon and evening, typically 15:00 or 16:00 until 23:00 or midnight. You sleep without an alarm and have mornings free for appointments, gym or childcare handovers; the price is missing most evening social life, dinners and weeknight games. Many people find it the easiest shift on the body: no early start, no fight against the clock at 03:00.
What is 3rd shift, and what hours does it run?
Third shift is the overnight block, usually 23:00 to 07:00 or midnight to 08:00. It often pays a differential on top of base pay and tends to be quieter, with fewer managers around. The cost is biological: you are asking your body to sleep in daylight, and it takes discipline with blackout curtains, caffeine cut-offs and a steady routine to make it sustainable. Our night shift guide covers that in detail.
Which one should you pick?
If you have school-age children, 1st keeps your evenings and 2nd keeps your mornings; couples on opposite shifts sometimes cover childcare between them without paying for it. If you are a natural late sleeper, 2nd shift is usually the comfortable answer. Take 3rd for the pay premium or the quiet only if you can protect your daytime sleep seriously.
Whichever you land on, the hard part is keeping track when patterns rotate. That is exactly what ShiftAl was built for: tap your shifts into a colour-coded calendar, see your real pay including night premiums, and set alarms that match the rota rather than the ordinary morning.
What time does 2nd shift usually start and end?
Most second shifts run 15:00 to 23:00 or 16:00 to 00:00. Some employers shift it an hour either way, so check the posting; anything starting mid-afternoon and ending near midnight is second shift.
Is 3rd shift bad for your health?
Long-term night work is linked to sleep and metabolic problems, but the dose matters: consistent schedules, protected daytime sleep and regular checkups reduce the risk considerably. Rotating rapidly between days and nights is harder on the body than steady nights.
Do 2nd and 3rd shifts pay more?
Often, yes. Many employers pay a shift differential, a fixed amount or percentage on top of base pay for evening and night hours. It is not required by law in most places, so it varies by company and contract.
